Residential Services

The Basics of Home Sharing

Home Sharing is funded by Community Living BC (CLBC).

Home Sharing is a service provided by contracted caregivers who welcome the individual into their homes, lives, and families. Home share contractors provide a safe, nurturing, community-based shared living arrangement for an adult with a developmental disability.

The Home Sharing arrangements vary depending on the unique needs of the individual being supported in the home. Arrangements may involve the individual having one caregiver, a roommate sharing an apartment or house, or a whole family supporting the individual with one family member as the primary caregiver.

The Home Share experience is fulfilling, rewarding, and the opportunities that become present open up a whole new world for both the individual and the caregiver.

The Fort St John Association for Community Living contracts with home sharing providers for the following two support services:
• Home Sharing – full-time residential care.
• Respite - periodic care for Home Sharing providers or families who need a break from caring for their loved one.

What are the expectations of me as a Home Share provider?

We are looking for people who share our vision of “community”.

Compatibility is imperative. We are looking for people whose lifestyles and personal interests fuse with those of the people they support. Home Share providers go through an extensive screening process, which includes a detailed written application, self-assessment, home study process, physicians clearance, criminal record search, and completion of personal and professional related references.

What support do I receive as a Home Share provider?

The Fort St. John Association for Community Living works with the Home Sharing provider through monitoring, training opportunities, and ongoing support. We see Home Sharing as a team effort. Assistance is available to contractors at any time.

How am I paid?

Home Sharing providers are independent contractors, and are not employees of The Fort St. John Association for Community Living. Each contract is different based on the particular needs of the person being supported through Home Sharing. Providers are paid a monthly fee for service. The person being supported also contributes a fixed amount each month towards household expenses.

”We considered Home Sharing thinking that we could make a positive difference in someone’s life. We now realize that she has contributed more to us. It has created a more caring, peaceful atmosphere and brought a greater sense of family to our home.” – Mark & Alice

“Bryan has enriched my life in ways that I just did not anticipate. We do more as a family… eat more meals together and laugh together more often. We didn’t enter into Home Sharing lightly, as we see it as a long term commitment to another person. The whole experience has been amazing. I look forward to the challenges and adventures we are going to have together.” – Marilyn
