Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living Services are designed for individuals who already live or want to live in their own homes and who need targeted support to assist them to manage independently.

Scope of Services

Supported Independent Living (SIL) Service provides individualized, person-centred support to eligible adults with developmental disabilities and complex needs who live in their own home or in a semi-independent setting. The program is designed to help people live as safely and independently as possible while building a full and meaningful life in the community. Supports are based on each person’s goals, strengths, preferences, assessed needs, and personal support plan.

SIL services are provided in the person’s home and in community settings, depending on what is needed. Support can include help with meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, budgeting, banking, bill paying, housekeeping, daily living skills, health routines, medication support, personal safety, safety planning, risk assessment, and community participation. Where risks or vulnerabilities are identified, SIL staff support individualized planning that promotes safety while respecting the person’s dignity, rights, choices, and independence.

SIL staff often serve as a key connection point between the individual and other service providers, supporting communication, coordination, and continuity of care across health, mental health, and community systems. This may include coordination with health care providers, CLBC, families or personal support networks, landlords, mental health services, employment supports, and other community partners, as appropriate and with consent.

Because SIL is individualized, there is not one fixed schedule for everyone. FSJACL’s approach is to match hours of service to the person’s needs so access to supports can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, based on personal planning, assessed need, available programming, and funded service levels. Access to SIL is typically through CLBC eligibility and referral.

There is no direct program fee established within this scope of service. Any client contribution, rent, or personal living expense obligations are determined separately based on housing arrangement, funder requirements, and individual circumstances.

Our services are funded by Community Living BC (CLBC).  To access our services, you must first be eligible through CLBC. Please refer to the Community Living BC eligibility page for more information.
